Can you believe it’s that time of the semester again?? Time really does fly!

I’ve really enjoyed most of my subjects this semester and I’m definitely going to tell you more about what courses I took and what I thought about them in the future when I get some more time.

I’m pretty scared about them and honestly I’m just hopping to pass at this point.

Exams can be nerve wrecking and I want to get them over with.

My first one is on the 10th and my last one is on 20th so I have exactly ten anxiety filled days where I’m going to be sweating a lot and probably breathing weird.

In case I don’t post as regularly during those 10 days I hope you guys understand why!

5 Ways To Save Money While In University

When I first started university I had no idea just how expensive it would be. Everyone talks about how expensive the tuition fees are but in reality that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, if you don’t make an effort to try to keep your expenses low it’s easy to end up spending way over budget. Here are some ways I found to help keep living costs down:

Meals

Even though it sounds really tempting to eat out as much as you can since university can be overwhelming and leaves little time for cooking it can also be very expensive to do so. Instead of eating out all the time or ordering in, try things like meal planning. You can keep your ingredients ready or make more food and freeze some for later. This will save both your time and money.

Buy in bulk

Although some things get spoilt/expired if kept for too long a lot of things that we use on a daily basis don’t. If you know there are certain items that you will be using regularly make sure to buy them in bulk such as toilet paper, tissue paper, water bottles etc.

Transportation

Whether it’s paying for gas, an Uber or a Taxi, transportation can be expensive but there are a few ways to travel without actually paying too much for it! For example, check out your bus timings because using the bus instead of using your car can really save a lot of money(plus it’s way better for the environment!)

Living expenses

Living expenses can end up being really expensive especially while you’re still a student. However, because you’re a student many people do offer student discounts so remember to ask them if they offer this before paying for something. Plus, try to keep living expenses low by shutting off lights when you’re not using them or getting a roommate to split the expenses with.

Used items

Universities often expect you to buy a lot of things such as textbooks which are not affordable whatsoever! However, getting used items can really keep the cost at a minimal. A lot of universities do sell used textbooks and other used items so be sure to check these out before actually buying something new.

My Scary Experience

So today I had this presentation for my piracy class which was super scary!

I really like the class but I just really hate presentations because I have anxiety as it is I don’t need it to be made worse with worrying about talking in front of a bunch of people.

Also for some reason (probably because it’s such a fun class) everyone always shows up so there are at least like fifteen to twenty people there.

And I am really not a fan of speaking in front of people especially if there are more then ten people. Plus, two of the people who were supposed to present with us could not make it.

It was a pretty scary experience and I stuttered and stammered and rambled A LOT.

But it was also kind of fun and I think it went pretty well for a first presentation. I learnt a lot from the experience and hope to do better the next time I have to present (which I’m hoping is never!)… maybe next time I’ll be less freaked out I hope…

I think we all know university can be a huge financial struggle for a lot of people, some people only get a small loan that doesn’t cover their rent, some get no loan and others are not in a position to borrow money when needed. So, for many people getting a job is a necessity while studying.

For me, my loan unfortunately only covers half my annual rent total and all the money I saved working over summer just wouldn’t be enough to cover 6 months rent, food money, social money and transport and therefore, I had to find a job.

3 Tips To Study Effectively For Your Exams

Now that exams are almost here I thought I’d share this with you guys! It definitely has some very helpful tips!

How To Deal With Anxiety When Moving

Whether it’s moving out of your parents house or moving to a different continent moving is always super terrifying. Some months ago I made the huge decision of moving from Kenya to Canada for university and as someone with anxiety it was pretty stressful and anxiety inducing. Here are some tips that helped me deal with my anxiety during the move.

Stay focused- Sometimes anxiety can really get the best of you and a lot of times I ended up thinking “is this really what I want?”, “is this worth it?”, but you have to remember your goal. You have to remember everything you are going to be able to gain if you go through with it. Really think about it and don’t let anxiety cloud your thinking. If you want, you can write down all the reasons you want to/should move so that whenever you’re feeling anxious you can read it and remember why you’re doing this and why it’s worth it!

Yoga and meditation- I know I talk about this one a lot but the truth is yoga and meditation can really be life savers for a lot of people with anxiety. It will help you stay calm both in your everyday life and during stressful times such as moving. It helps focus your mind and teaches you to control your thoughts.

Take some time off- Take some time to relax and watch a movie or something. Your life doesn’t need to revolve around the move although it’s understandable that a major part of it will. Sometimes you just need to shut off your brain and do nothing which is where reality TV comes in… seriously it’s a great distraction!

Hobbies- Remember to have some hobbies like reading, writing, watch TV in your sweat pants… It helps to do a bunch of other stuff too because when your mind is idle it tends to over-think things and that’s often when the anxiety takes over.

Talk to a professional- If you’re feeling really anxious and nothing seems to be working please do talk to a professional about your situation. Just talking about what you’re going through really helps sometimes and there is nothing wrong with seeking help.

Why I Haven’t Posted In A Bit!

So I have my finals starting this week and as you can imagine I’ve been absolutely stressed out with finishing all my assignments and revising!

And to be honest WordPress does get distracting so I’ve tried to stay away from it so I don’t get distracted and can concentrate on my studies

Life Updates!

I know I haven’t been blogging much or keeping up to date with everyone else’s blog

However, I thought I would update you with everything that’s going on right now (admittedly not a lot…)

I have a bunch of assignments due soon (one tomorrow and 3 next week) and I have a midterm test next week for Sociology so I’ll mostly be revising this week which is very hard to do when it’s cold and snowing and all you want to do is curl up in bed and hibernate.

I also tried out some vegan Indian food from Touch Of India this week which was really good! Touch of India is one of the only two Indian restaurants in St. Catharines (at least that I know of!) and I thought it would be fun to try out their lunch specials!

It was really good and it pretty affordable too which is always a plus! I would definitely recommend it if you’re ever in St. Catharines!

I also skipped a seminar for the first time since I’ve been in university and felt kinda guilty about it but it wasn’t too important and I really did not want to go. It was super cold and snowy and I just could not deal with it.

Dream Journal!

So today in Psychology we were learning about sleep and dreams and talked about different dreams and how they can be interpreted and it remind me of High School because my friends and I used to discuss the dreams we had that night and we would try to analyse them. It was really a lot of fun!

Coincidentally, just last week I had a really insightful dream that helped clear some things in my waking life and I remember thinking “sometimes I learn more in my dreams than when I’m awake”. Dreams have always fascinated me because I truly believe they have an important meaning behind them and listening to your dreams helps you bring your unconscious thoughts into your conscious which is sometimes what we really need in life. Dreams have a way of telling you things about yourself.

I would really love to explore my unconscious more and that’s why I decided to get a dream journal! I don’t remember my dreams as often as I would like to but my professor said the more we try to remember them the more likely we are to actually remember them.

I Have Escaped The Rocks!

It’s official I no longer have to learn about rocks (kinda technically)! I switched my Earth Science course and now I’m taking a different Earth Science course about cosmology!! I hope it’s like Cosmos (the show) because I loved that!
