5 Kat Von D Lipstick Shades You Need This Fall

Kat Von D’s makeup line is known for their Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks because they actually are the closest thing to everlasting that I’ve come across so far! Kat Von D products are cruelty free and vegan. Here are five shades that would be perfect for fall even though I know fall is technically half way through!

Lolita I- This is honestly my favourite shade like ever. I wear it all the time all year around but it looks extra amazing in fall since it’s more brownish and looks perfect with the changing of the leaves and weather. Also this is the perfect shade for people with olive skin looking for a nude lipstick that doesn’t look weird.

Lolita II- Another perfect shade for fall. It’s really beautiful and again since it’s more orange it looks great in fall with the changing leaves.

Madrid

Madrid- This is more of a warm redwood color and again a really perfect nude lipstick for people with olive skin.

Bow N Arrow

Bow N Arrow- I never get tired of brown shades and this is another one that is just so warm and perfect for fall.

Outlaw-  Don’t worry this isn’t another brown shade! This one is a brick red because red always looks classy and elegant especially in fall when some of the trees are all red and pretty!

The Guy From Another League by Kristina Gallo

GoodReads Blurb:

This is a book about a girl who made a wrong choice. It will bring her humiliation and disgrace. Her relationship will bring out the worse from her. She will gamble with her reputation, lose her friends and dignity. All for the guy who just wanted the one-night stand.

My Thoughts:

Before I start this I just want to appreciate the fact that Kristina’s first language is not English yet she has managed to publish a number of books in English which I think is really inspiring!

I am not a fan of books about love and relationships in general so I was slightly skeptical about this one. However, I knew that it would be interesting since I have read other works written by Kristina and I was impressed with them. As expected I was pleasantly surprised by this one too.

The book is about a girl, Renata, who falls in love with a man, Davon, who clearly doesn’t want the same things as her from the relationship. It’s eye opening and beautifully realistic. If you’re sick of reading about super feminine women who are portrayed unrealistically this is definitely the book for you. I would definitely recommend it and even if you usually don’t read these sort of books in general.

ELF BB Cream With SPF 20 Review

I have started using this product for a few weeks now and I decided to do a little review about it because I was so freaking impressed! Now if you’ve read any of my other makeup posts you’ll know I love ELF and it’s my favourite vegan and cruelty free beauty brand right now. It was so affordable, honestly, when I first bought an e.l.f product I was like that’s suspicious like do they not have good quality products but they do!

Anyway, back to the BB cream, I was again a little skeptical because I’m not a big fan of BB creams or foundation because I have pretty dry skin and a lot of foundations and BB creams I tried prior to this ended up making my skin look even dryer and sometimes flaky.

I bought the product a while back but I didn’t actually try it till I got back to Kenya and I was left speechless (which is shocking for me I talk about everything including the taste of water). To begin with it was so creamy and beautiful it made my skin look not only hydrated but radiant and my face seemed to glow! I have NEVER used a foundation or BB cream that made me look like that and I was always trying to look for products to make me look like that.

Secondly, the product had an amazing coverage for a BB cream- usually I have do like 2 layers with BB cream to get that much coverage but this had the coverage of a foundation! Although I do have to point out that I don’t have any acne or scars or noticeable marks on my face I just have some discolouration so I don’t need that much coverage- if you do have any of the above use a concealer as well as the BB cream because even though it does have great coverage it’s not a concealer. But anyway, it did cover up my skin really well.

Thirdly, it was so lightweight and natural looking that you can totally wear it on a daily basis and no one would even realise you’re wearing any makeup! It blends really well and looks so natural you just look like you have a nice natural glow.

Lastly, it costs $6.00 and weighs 285ml which is super affordable even for a drugstore brand! It’s also packaged really well so you can easily travel with it or carry it around with you in case you want to retouch your makeup although honestly, I wear it all day sometimes and it doesn’t move an inch.

FINAL THOUGHTS: To sum it up I was super impressed with this product! It’s really affordable, has an amazing formula, works for both dry and oily skin plus as an extra added bonus it’s both vegan and cruelty free!

DusitD2

As you guys know I’ve been back in Nairobi for a while and I thought I would explore a little and go see some new places I’ve never been to before. This post is actually coming in a little late because we visited the place like 3 weeks ago.

Anyway we decided to first check out the Rouge Deck which is by far the coolest place I’ve been to recently! It’s located in DusitD2 which is actually a hotel but has a lot of cool things too! They have a red pool and there’s a sitting area in the pool- like right in it- which is why it’s called the Rouge Deck! That was a really bad description to be honest so just check out the pictures below to get a better idea of what it looks like!

Once we were done with our drinks we decided to check out the rest of DusitD2. First we checked out the super awesome looking restaurants which also have vegan and vegetarian options!

Then we decided to go see their studio which was the prettiest place ever with some amazing artwork!

Later we decided to explore a little more, however, some of the floors are restricted but we were lucky enough to go see them anyway!

Overall, I had an amazing time! They have some amazing restaurants if you’re interested in going to eat, they have some super cute little stores if you’re in the mood to buy something and if you just want to hang out and have some drinks the Rouge Lounge is absolutely the perfect place for it!

My 5 Favorite Matte Lipsticks!

  1. Kat Von D– I’m going to start out by saying that Kat Von D is kind of pricey however her everlasting liquid lipsticks are the greatest lipsticks I’ve ever used. Nothing else has ever compared and if it wasn’t for the fact that they are pretty expensive I would have all of them! They feel so light like you’re not even wearing any lipstick and they stay on no matter what! Seriously, the world could end and your lipstick would still be on fleek. My favourite shade so far has been Lolita I.
  2. E.L.FThese are so affordable and really great to use! No they won’t stay on for the whole day and you’ll probably need to reapply them every hour or so but they are still really great if you’re on a budget and need some good matte lipsticks. The quality is really good and the colours are super cute!
  3. Huda– Again her lipsticks are on the pricey side but they are so worth it because they look absolutely amazing and stay on for at least a few hours depending on what you’ll be doing! The colours are amazing and her lip sets come with a liner too which makes it so much easier to contour your lips!
  4. Sleek– their matte lipsticks are my second favourite to wear when I’m going to be eating or drinking because they too tend to stay. Not as great as Kat Von D but a much more affordable alternative with pretty similar results. They have a really great variety of shades too!
  5. NYX– NYX are another more affordable brand on the list and they’re great if you’re on a budget. In all honesty I don’t own a lot of NYX lipsticks but the ones that I do have are absolutely amazing! No they won’t last forever but they are really cute and they’re not the annoying dry matte so they don’t make your lips look super dry. Also you can always reapply them.

T.V Show Review: Jessica Jones

*Warning: Contains Spoilers*

“A big part of the job is looking for the worst in people. Turns out I excel at that.”

I started watching Jessica Jones last Friday and have been absolutely obsessed with it ever since. I have literally told everyone I know to watch it because it is the most amazing show I’ve ever seen. Marvel never seems to disappoint and Jessica Jones is evidence of that.

Jessica Jones is a Netflix original series that revolves around the life of Jessica Jones a sort of anti-hero. She is extremely introverted and has barely any friends at the beginning. We also see that she has superhuman strength and later in the show we realize she has been experimented on which is why she has this super power. In the start we see her throwing a man out of her door after she tells him his wife is cheating on him- she’s a private detective. However the plot gets even better when we see her following around a random man we later realize is Luke- a man she has a lot of history with.

Jessica, from the minute the show starts till the end, is the brooding, introverted, badass, brunette I wanted to model my life after. She doesn’t care what people have to say, she doesn’t even try to please anyone and she pretty much lives her own life. Of course she is kind of an alcoholic who binge drinks but then again who isn’t!

Unfortunately, her usual habitual life is interrupted by the return of her sadistic and sociopathic ex- Kilgrave. Her past finally begins to unravel when two parents whose daughter goes missing arrive at her doorstep for help. She soon starts to realize that their daughter has fallen prey to none other than Kilgrave who she assumed (hoped) was dead. She is forced to remember her past and finally face Kilgrave. He too has a form of superpowers except he uses them for pure evil and often to stalk Jessica.

Not only does Jessica Jones now need to protect herself and those around her, she is also forced to protect others too from the wrath of Kilgrave. This season tells us a lot about her past and how she became who she is. It also tells us that she was always sort of a hero- trying to help out others like her step sister/bestie who was a victim of her abusive mother.

The side characters on this show like Trish (her sister/bestie), Simpson, Kilgrave’s parents, Malcolm, Jeri and more make the show even more interesting and show a different side of the otherwise lonely and distant Jessica- like the way she saves Malcolm who will always be grateful to her or the always a little evil Jeri Hogarth.

I cannot wait for season two to come out because I’m hoping it will explain to us how Jessica got her powers, what happened to Simpson and more! That’s also another reason to start watching Jessica Jones– there’s only one season out and you can easily binge watch and finish it and catch up with the show. The best part of this show is that even though the episodes can be similar sometimes they never get boring- the end of each episode always leaves you wanting more.

Book Review: A Thousand Splendid Suns

*Warning: Contains Spoilers*

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is an incredible book about two women from different families and different backgrounds who are forced to suffer the same fate as a result of unfortunate events. These two women go on to form an extraordinary bond and fight for their freedom. Unlike Hosseini’s first book The Kite Runner this one focuses more on the lives of young women in Afghanistan. I originally read this book for my English class and absolutely loved it. Hosseini has a certain way of using characters to bring out emotions and create realistic situations. His books are always very honest and raw and discuss subjects that need to be more openly discussed if we want a way to solve them.

This book begins with the narration of a young Afghan girl Marriam who is living a miserable life where she feels trapped by her dramatically possessive mother. She is closer to her father who visits her often but always leaves her anyway. Her father has wives and Marriam’s mother is only a maid who once worked for them and so she lives further away on her own. Her father obviously feels guilty about the situation but is too afraid to do anything about it and Marriam’s mother is too irrational to truly help Marriam understand the situation better.

One unfortunate day, Marriam decides to leave her mother to go visit her father even though she is forbidden to and comes back to find that her mother has committed suicide leaving her all alone. Her father who is influenced by his wives decides to marry her off to a significantly older shoemaker, Rasheed. The marriage quickly goes downhill and soon she lives in fear of his ever changing moods, violent temper, control and trust issues and misogynistic views. He believes that men should never lose control of their wives and to prove this point he forces her to wear a burqa and he often ridicules, insults and torments her, sometimes physically abusing her.

Laila is also a young girl living in Afghanistan whose life is turned upside down when a rocket lands on her house killing her family. Her boyfriend Tariq has already left for Pakistan and when she realizes she’s pregnant with Tariq’s baby she agrees to marry Rasheed when he asks her.

At first Marriam is furious and accuses Laila of stealing her husband but after the baby arrives she starts to soften towards Laila. Soon Marriam and Laila are closer than ever. Knowing that they only have each other they quickly start trying to defend each other against Rasheed’s rages and abuse which only angers him more. Hosseini allows the reader an insight not only into the lives of these women and their suffering but into Afghanistan before and after the Taliban rule. He talks about how men were forced to grow beards, women were forced to cover up, women weren’t allowed to go out of their house alone without being accompanied by a male and at one point he talks about how women in labor were turned away from hospitals because the two genders weren’t allowed to use the same hospitals.

This book really portrays Afghanistan and its people in a different light instead of the stereotypical way we often see it portrayed by the media. It really makes you think about life and how much these people have been through. By the end you will truly become emotionally attached to the characters. This is a must read book that I could not put down.

“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls”

Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Part 1

*WARNING: CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS*

I know everyone has probably written their reviews for this movie but I wanted to write it a bit later after discussing it with everyone and reading some other reviews too. So instead of talking about the plot I will be talking mainly about the characters, especially the newly introduced ones. But I must admit I did love the plot (although it was extremely similar to the plots of past episodes). Everything about the movie seemed great too- the actors and actresses did a great job, the lighting and sound was obviously great and I really loved how J.J Abrams paid homage to the original movies. So here is what I think of the characters:

Rey

Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) who is the new main character and who is shown as a powerful and clever female is definitely one of my new favorite characters. Her past is very mysterious and all we seem to know about her is that she was left at Jakku at a young age and learnt to be a scavenger. She is also a talented pilot and fighter. She first became involved when she found BB-8 and later Finn. Another thing that makes her extremely interesting is that The Force is very, very strong with her and the lightsaber that was earlier used by Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) and Luke Skywalker called to her. This has got fans all over speculating who her parents are because we all know that The Force is very strong in the Skywalker family. Even though her piloting skills remind us of Han Solo I still don’t think he and Leia are Rey’s parents. Neither he nor Leia mentioned a daughter and Kylo Ren didn’t recognize her either and only mocked her for wishing Han Solo was her father. In my opinion I think she may be Luke’s daughter. The movie ends with her finally finding Luke who has been gone for 20 years and whose location had been previously unknown. I look forward to seeing her (hopefully) as a Jedi in the next episode.

Finn

Finn (played by John Boyega) formerly known as FN-2187, is obviously the sort of lost, confused, funny and sweet character you can instantly take a liking to. Formerly a stormtrooper, he deserted his post and eventually ended up joining the Resistance against the First Order. He became friends with Poe Dameron, a member of the resistance, when they escaped the First Order together however they were separated when they crashed in Jakku where Finn eventually met Rey. They escaped in the Millennium Falcon and eventually met Han Solo who seemed to be a legend as both a rebel fighter and a smuggler. At first Finn wanted nothing to do with the Resistance or the First Order and instead just wanted to hide but seeing that they had captured Rey (who he seems to have thing for) he decided to join the Resistance and fight against the First Order. After seeing Kylo Ren kill his father Han Solo and hurt Rey he briefly uses the lightsaber to fight Kylo Ren but is unsuccessful. His past, similarly to Rey’s is unknown, as he was taken to be a stromtrooper at a very young age and didn’t remember his past. People do seem to be hinting that Lando may be his father but of course there isn’t any solid evidence to show this yet. The movie leaves Finn unconscious but seeming to be in recovery as Rey leaves his side to find Luke Skywalker.

Poe Dameron

Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac) is again a new character who is very important and interesting to watch. He worked The New Republic and later with the Resistance, he is an amazing pilot and he is insanely hot. In the very first scene we see him give BB-8 the information given to him by Lor San Tekka, who apparently knew where Luke was, to keep safely. It has a part of the map that leads to where Luke Skywalker is. Unfortunately, he is captured by Kylo Ren who learns that Poe gave it to BB-8. Poe is than saved by Finn, a rebel stormtrooper and as they both escape he insists they go back to Jakku to find BB-8 even though Finn insists this would be a mistake. As they are arguing about where to go they are hit and end up in Jakku anyway but Poe seems to have died in the crash as their Finalizer explodes and Finn is left on his own. However, we see Dameron again and it turns out he landed on a different planet and is now back with the Resistance. In the end we see him bid farewell to Rey as she goes to seek Luke.

Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa who turned to the Dark Side of the Force. From when he was young he seemed to be different and so his parents sent him to Luke (who at the time was training new Jedi’s) to train him to be a Jedi. However, this idea ended horribly as Ben became Kylo Ren and ended up killing all the other Jedi’s and joining the Dark Side. This incident devastated Luke who left without a trace. Kylo Ren is obviously the villain here and he believes he is continuing the work of his grandfather Darth Vader. Of course it is hard to take over the place of the antagonist from a famous villain like Darth Vader but watching him kill his own father Han Solo (which was the most depressing death ever in my opinion) who was unarmed proved the point really well. The Force is very strong with him just like the rest of his family however we see him being overpowered by Rey both when he tries to get information out of her and when they have a fight in the woods. In the end of the final battle between Kylo Ren and Rey, Kylo is injured but is rescued by General Hux who was commanded to do so by Supreme Leader Snoke as he wanted to complete Kylo’s training.

This is the end of the first part of this review! Hope you enjoyed it and don’t forget to like, share, follow and comment about what you thought of The Force Awakens and who your favorite character is.
