The City of Saints: The Hood Series Book Review

The City Of Saints

“Because a ten-year-olds will to freedom is a greater threat to monarchy then weapons are.”
“I have a mind of my own, but I am not allowed to think for myself.”

Amazon- 4.7 out of 5 stars

Summary:

In a dystopian world, cyborgs have taken over. To escape persecution and genocide, a ten-year-old girl, Nuha Edel must run away from a war her elders have started. With the spread of an unknown disease and the rise of anarchy, Nuha tries to flee from the wreckage of war but instead ends up in the arms of the cyborgs, who are programmed to kill her kind.

The real problem erupts when Nuha realizes that the war she’s running away from is a part of who she is. Being born different is not a blessing but a curse and the only way to uplift that curse is to fight or fall, and Nuha is ready for neither.

The City of Saints is an unforgettable tale of kinship and betrayal, enmity and forgiveness. It transports the reader into a future where artificial intelligence and humans are fighting for humanity and morality. A future steeped in blood and revenge, loyalty and remedy. It explores how history has the ability to resurface, no matter how deeply it is buried.

GoodReads-  4.0 out of 5 stars
Summary:

But stumbles upon Specialized Assassin Military-bot, SAM who vows to protect her. On their path to safety, SAM and Nuha meet an old man, Xander who is greatly affected by a water-borne disease. Can a ten-year-old girl, a cyborg, and an old man find an escape from the extinction of mankind?

About The Author:

A. Rinum was born in Kharian, Pakistan. She moved to the United States when she was four years old but moved back to Pakistan at the age of eight. When she was fourteen years old, her family decided to move back to the states again. Currently, she lives in New York City and is obtaining her Bachelors in Biochemistry. Rinum started writing at the age of ten and is currently working on a poetry book.

My Opinion:

So I’m going to try really hard to review this book without giving away any spoilers because I felt like one of the best parts of reading the book was the twists and turns.

To begin with I thought this was a really great book overall. The writing was good, the plot was unique and fascinating and the characters were inspiring and relatable. I have been a really big fan of dystopic books since I was in high school and one of the themes we had to write on was dystopia. I think that was one of the reasons I really enjoyed the book.

The character of Nuha was a really great one too since she is a ten year old which brings out her innocence and purity. The rest of the characters are also easy to bond with and be empathetic to.

The plot was really interesting and I think the story line is really great. It’s one of those books that takes unexpected turns and twists that leave you wanting more.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of dystopic novels or futuristic books. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of dystopia I would still recommend checking out this book I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

DusitD2

As you guys know I’ve been back in Nairobi for a while and I thought I would explore a little and go see some new places I’ve never been to before. This post is actually coming in a little late because we visited the place like 3 weeks ago.

Anyway we decided to first check out the Rouge Deck which is by far the coolest place I’ve been to recently! It’s located in DusitD2 which is actually a hotel but has a lot of cool things too! They have a red pool and there’s a sitting area in the pool- like right in it- which is why it’s called the Rouge Deck! That was a really bad description to be honest so just check out the pictures below to get a better idea of what it looks like!

Once we were done with our drinks we decided to check out the rest of DusitD2. First we checked out the super awesome looking restaurants which also have vegan and vegetarian options!

Then we decided to go see their studio which was the prettiest place ever with some amazing artwork!

Later we decided to explore a little more, however, some of the floors are restricted but we were lucky enough to go see them anyway!

Overall, I had an amazing time! They have some amazing restaurants if you’re interested in going to eat, they have some super cute little stores if you’re in the mood to buy something and if you just want to hang out and have some drinks the Rouge Lounge is absolutely the perfect place for it!

I just want to take a minute to thank all my amazing followers out there! When I first started this blog I didn’t know what to expect or if it would even work out but I’m so glad I stuck with blogging. It has opened up a whole new world for me. I have made so many friends from around the world that I would otherwise have never known. I’ve learnt so much too and have got so much inspiration from you guys! Thank you for always supporting me and my writing. When I see the likes, follows, shares and comments it really lifts me up and makes a difference in my life. Thank you all for everything and I hope you guys continue to support the blog.

I also want to say there are some changes coming to the blog! I am adding a few new categories which means I’ll be blogging more often now- everyday minus the weekends if possible! I’m really excited about that and don’t worry I’ll still be doing all the other stuff I did, these are just some additions to that!

I just wanted to end this post by saying thank you again for making blogging so amazing for me and your continued support! All this is because of you guys!

So I finally decided to join Instagram! To check out my profile click here.

I decided to join because firstly I wanted to share my blog posts on it and secondly I thought it would be fun to share a bit more of my life and what I’m doing because as much as I try to share on my blog I can’t really share everything I do every 20 seconds because that would be weird and slightly annoying but totally normal on Instagram! 😂

I also wanted to sort of make more memories and I thought this would give me more incentive to go out more often and also try new things. It also help me kind of document my life and this way I have pictures/videos to look back at and remember stuff and smile!

Image result for instagram gif funny

I am also planning on sharing vegan and vegetarian recipes as well as some posts about makeup (like tips and my favourite brands) because I feel like Instagram would be better for that then my blog.

My 2016 Favorites!!!

So it’s almost the end of the year and I really wanted to share some of the things I really enjoyed this year!

My 5 Favorite Books Of 2016:

  1.  The Unknown Ego– this book is about the Freudian theory of the ego and how it effects behavior. It explains from a psychodynamic approach how human behavior is effected by the by our earlier experiences in life. I would not really encourage everyone to read it but I would encourage anyone who is interested in psychology, especially the psychodynamic approach, to check this book out. I’m still barely starting to learn psychology but since I want to become a therapist I thought I should read up on it and this book was so easy to follow and simple so I also really liked it for that reason.
  2.  We The Living By Ayn Rand– This is the first book I’ve ever read by Ayn Rand and I can tell you it was really something. It takes place in Soviet Russia and even though it is a work of fiction it is quite realistic is showing what life was for the Russians after the Civil War- especially for those who did not support the Reds. I would highly recommend reading this book at least once unless you’re the kind of person who gets depressed easily by books (I’m like that too! I literally cried after reading this) in which case I would suggest you avoid it by all means.
  3.  On The Road by Jack Kerouac– I don’t even know what to say about this book. This book has changed my life in such a way that I could never be thankful enough. Kerouac has been a lifesaver for me. I wanted to read this book for quite a long time and when I finally did it turned out to be so much more than I expected. It’s about a young mans journey around the US with his incredibly amusing and often outrageous friends. This book inspired me to start working on my own book starting next year and gave me some amazing ideas. While reading this book I felt like my mind just opened up and I had this amazing epiphany. Even to people who don’t usually enjoy reading I would highly encourage reading this book. Believe me it will change your life!
  4. Othello by William Shakespeare– I was really inspired by this book too and found it a fascinating read. This is probably my favorite Shakespeare book so far and I actually read it because I had to for my English Literature for school. It is a sad description of how a mans life is ruined and turned upside down due to racism and prejudice and his wife too suffers a sad fate for her undying love for him. I would recommend this book to everyone but if you’re a fan of Shakespeare or if you don’t mind the kind of olden English used in this book you should totally check it out!
  5. Bluebeard’s Egg And Other Stories by Margret Atwood– I have been obsessed with Atwood’s work since I first read The Handmaids Tale which I also had to read for my English Literature but last year. This book is a variety of short stories which are all incredibly interesting with surprising and mostly pretty sad endings. I would highly recommend this to anyone who’s a fan of Atwood’s work or of kind of depressing short stories in general…

Honorable Mention- The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy By Douglas Adams– The only reason this book isn’t on the list is because I kind of felt like the sequels were not as amazing as the first book and in fact I am finding it kind of difficult to finish the last book. This book however (the first one) is witty, sarcastic, humorous, kind of insane and really interesting. I would highly recommend giving it a read especially since it’s quite small and you can finish it in like a day.

My 5 Favorite TV Shows Of 2016:

  1.  30 Rock– The cast includes Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and more. It’s hilarious, interesting, deep, sarcastic and basically one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen!
  2.  Arrested Development– The cast includes Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Portia De Rossi, David Cross and many more incredible actors! It was hilarious, outrageous, emotional, thought provoking and more. I would highly recommend watching it even though the end is kind of left hanging because it didn’t really end (it’s hard to explain just Google it!)
  3.  The Office (US)– The cast includes Steve Carrell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, B.J Novak and many more. The first word that comes to mind when remembering this show is probably outrageous. From Jim’s silly pranks and antics to his love for Pam he stole our heart. Steve Carrell may be the worst boss ever but he too will forever be remembered fondly as Michael Scott. If you’re a fan of Parks and Rec or The Office (UK) I would highly recommend this show.
  4.  Modern Family– The cast includes Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and many more incredible actors. I absolutely love this show. It’s hilarious yet enables to learn so much about both life and family. It’s ongoing and if you haven’t began catching up yet all I can say is what are you waiting for?!?
  5. Fresh Off The Boat– The cast includes Randall Park, Constance Wu, Hudson Yang, Ian Chen, Forrest Wheeler, Lucille Soong and many more amazing actors. It’s funny and relatable and surprisingly emotional. I have really enjoyed so far and look forward to more episodes.

My 5 Favorite Movies Of 2016:

  1.  Rogue One- Absolutely brilliant and surprisingly sassy. Even if you haven’t watched any other Star Wars movies and even if you aren’t a huge Star Wars fan you will still love this movie.
  2.  Finding Dory- This movie just proves that Ellen DeGeneres can do no wrong. I would highly recommend you watch this movie.
  3.  Zootopia- Hilarious with an amazing moral about peace and unity. Really loved this movie.
  4.  Sausage Party- I would definitely not recommend this to everyone but if you are a fan of Seth Rogen do find some time to check it out. It’s quite funny!
  5.  Central Intelligence- Hilarious and also very interesting! Definitely check it out if you haven’t so far.

My Favorite Musicians In 2016:

I hardly ever listen to new music so all the musicians below are going to be kind of old but they are what I listened to most this year.

  1.  Janis Joplin
  2.  Bob Dylan
  3.  The Beatles
  4.  Loudon Wainwright
  5.  Seth MacFarlane- Yes you read right! I said Seth MacFarlane. If you’ve heard of him before it’s probably because of his TV shows or movies but yes he does music to. If you’ve seen anything he’s worked on before don’t be scared because his music is the exact opposite. It’s deep, meaningful, beautiful, and truly amazing. Please do check out his music if you have some time!

So those are my favorites for this year! Please let me know yours in the comments below I would love to hear from you!

Also really random question but if anyone has a good recipe with parsnips let me know because I bought some yesterday but now I kind of am not sure what to do with them because I’ve never had parsnip before and I have no idea what they taste like… Thank you!! 🙂

My February

February was a pretty fun month and I thought I would share some of my favorite books and music from that month.

Books

bridget-jones-diary

“She smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and dresses like her mother”

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding- this book is eccentric, hilarious, crazy and fun. It may not be a literary classic but everyone needs to read this book at least once. It’s about a woman, Bridget, who is concerned about dying alone and being eaten by her dogs. In her desperation she ends up with a flirty, player and snubs a genuinely sweet man. The story consists of her figuring her life out and learning more about herself at the same time. If you want to read my full review for this book click here.

“The quicker you let go of old cheese the sooner you find new cheese”

Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Jones- as someone who finds change thoroughly uncomfortable this book was pretty helpful. I can sometimes be obsessive and I enjoy being habitual but this book was really helpful in pointing out the errors of my ways. To anyone who suffers from something similar I would strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this book.

Music

I don’t really have a particular song that I am obsessed with right now (except Work because it keeps getting stuck in my head) but I right now I am obsessed with The Ramones and everything by them.

Movies

Bridget Jones’s Diary– I really wanted to watch this movie after reading the book and I have to admit it was a great movie. The plot was very similar although not the same as some timings of events were changed. Something I didn’t particularly enjoy in the movie was how they had cut out most of the things Bridget’s mother and father did. Apart from a few annoying changes most of the changes were actually good and didn’t ruin the movie or plot at all. I also liked how the picked Colin Firth to play Mark Darcy!

The Man From U.N.C.L.E– this movie was both funny and entertaining. It had quite some action in it so it didn’t get boring at all. The witty humor, sarcasm and irony made the movie very enjoyable to watch. The plot pretty much revolves around two agents, one Russian and one American, who are forced to work together during the time of the Cold War.
