Top 5 Must-Read Books By The End Of This Summer (Guest Post)

It’s that time of the year when millions of people decide to leave their homes and seek unforgettable summer adventures. Most of them are trying to find a perfect beach to cool off, others are more interested in fresh mountain air, and some of them are simply looking for a new local dating place where they can find a new romance. At the end of the day, all of these journeys require traveling. Now, it doesn’t matter if you’re traveling by plane, bus, or a train, you simply have to bring a few books to read in order to kill some time. Many people claim that books are the perfect companions for a summer adventure, so we decided to share 5 awesome books you absolutely must read by the end of this season.

Into the Water – Author: Paula Hawkins

If you’re looking for a chilling, exhilarating, and mind-blowing thriller for this summer, “Into The Water” should definitely be on your must-read list for this year’s vacation. This is the first novel Paula Hawkings wrote since “The Girl on the Train”. We waited a long time for her new masterpiece and it’s finally here. At the beginning of this thriller, a mother and a girl are found at the bottom of a river. You may think the cause of death is an accidental drowning, but the actual truth lies deeply buried in the past.

Men without Women – Author: Haruki Murakami

No one tackles the modern problems better than Haruki Murakami. This book is actually a collection of various and interesting stories about lonely and unfortunate men. A plastic surgeon who cannot look beyond his girlfriends’ physical flaws, a jazz enthusiast who becomes a barkeep after his wife cheats on him, and a man who wakes up as Gregor Samsa from Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Three unusual stories you will definitely find rather interesting.

The Half-Drowned King – Author: Linnea Hartsuyker

If you’re a fan of hit TV shows like Game of Thrones and Vikings, this book will knock your socks off. It’s a story about Ragnvald Eysteinsson who is betrayed by his avaricious stepfather. In order to reclaim his right to the throne, he pledges his sword to a young warrior who aspires to become the king. This revenge tale is full of noble heroes who are fighting for power. An extracting adventure that will wake up your inner Viking warrior.

Autumn – Author: Karl Ove Knausgaard

How can a book called “Autumn” be a good read for the summer season? Well, considering the fact that the summer is almost over, Karl Ove decided that the end of August is the perfect time to publish his story. Autumn starts with a short letter Karl writes to his unborn daughter. Through this piece, he’s trying to describe her the beauties and pitfalls of material and natural world. This book is the first part of the quartet that will be based on the four seasons.

Marlena – Author: Julie Buntin

Julie’s book tells a super realistic story of a troubled teenager named Cat who lives with her single mom in Michigan. Clearly dissatisfied with her life, Cat is slowly, but surely becoming rather depressed. Then, when she least expects it, a neighbour girl called Marlena enters her boring life. She immediately changes Cat’s daily routine by pulling her into the world of sex, drugs, and other vices. A perfect read for your summer vacation.

Top 5 Must-Watch TV Series by the End of This Summer (Guest Post)

Seeing as most of the action has been taken off the big screen and into our TV devices, it’s only natural that there are so many great shows out there to watch. So, instead of spending your summer checking what famous people on Snapchat are doing every day, why not binge-watch one (or more) of these awesome shows?

1. Game of Thrones

Yes, we are fully aware that the latest season of Game of Thrones is nearly over, however, that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to remind yourself of the good, old times when Sean Bean and Jason Momoa were still on the show.

The epic fantasy show has been running since 2011, with its second to last season broadcasting the final episode on August 27. HBO really outdid itself with this one, because it turned a somewhat well-known series of books into a global phenomenon full of sex, violence and freaking dragons we all know and love.

2. Rick and Morty

It may seem like a silly kid’s show, but it’s nothing of the sort – Rick and Morty follows the titular characters, a super-smart scientist and his not-so-smart grandson on their dark and hilarious adventures through many ridiculous scenarios.

This Adultswim animated show is currently airing its third season with four more episodes left. With Justin Roiland voicing both of the series’ main characters, you’re bound for one hell of a ride with this show

3. The Man in the High Castle

When it comes to alternative history, no TV show comes close to the Amazon Original The Man in the High Castle. Instead of the Allied Forces winning WWI, this show depicts an alternate North America that lost the war to the Nazis.

Season 2 of this show aired in December 2016, while its third season is yet to come to our small screens this year. That’s exactly why you should catch up to the story that features actors like Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans, Luke Kleintank, DJ Qualls, and more.

4. Ozark

If you liked Breaking Bad, you’ll simply love Ozark. Imagine not only Walter White, but his whole family being in on the criminal activity whilst trying to avoid being murdered by a drug cartel – this pretty much sums up the plot of Ozark.

It just began airing this year with the finale of season 1 hitting our TVs in late July. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are the main stars of this Netflix masterpiece, which means you absolutely have to binge-watch it while it’s fresh.

5. Lucifer

God, devil, religion – all of these are rather controversial topics, unless you hand them over to Fox and let them make a TV show about it. Lucifer tells the story of, well, Lucifer, who decided to quit ruling Hell by moving to Los Angeles on opening a night club.

The show is packed with amazing humour mostly coming from Tom Ellis, who plays the lead role, but it also features incredible acting and some awesome action scenes. Season 2 ended in late May this year, so better get on with binge-watching this masterpiece before the next season hits in October.

Top 5 Must-Watch Movies by the End of this Summer (Guest Post)

The favorite season of many is almost gone, paving its way to a golden brown fall. And what better way is to fight the re-emerging autumnal nostalgia that slowly but surely closes in on us but to head to a local movie theatre and see what they have on the menu? After all, the entire year of 2017 is basically a huge cinematic buffet – according to the sounding announcements we have all witnessed throughout the year at least. Still, there are some headlines that have just premiered or are expected to make grand debuts soon, so we’ve decided to choose the freshest 5 we believe are the must-watch movies by the end of this summer.

#1 Annabelle: Creation

Genre: horror/thriller/fantasy

Release date: 8/11/2017

The horror fans are already thinking highly of the second installment of Annabelle (the first one didn’t go so well), which is taking place in The Conjuring universe. Rest assured this one is definitely worthy of your time, especially if you’re into creepy themes and you still think that Chucky rules. Annabelle: Creation takes place 12 years after the horrid accident dollmaker and his wife had when they suffered a tragic loss of a daughter. Now, they decide to give a shelter to a nun taking care of the group of local orphans. After all, Annabelle is safely locked away so she can’t hurt anyone…can she?

#2 The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Genre: comedy/action

Release date: 8/18/2017

With stars such as Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds and Gary Oldman we believe there’s simply no room for failure. The Hitman’s Bodyguard bursts with action and jokes that entice a genuine laugh. It might not be an Academy award material but it’s still pretty fun to watch, especially in the summer, when hard subjects and dramas are certainly to be avoided by all means. So we warmly suggest you this story of a bodyguard who is supposed to protect a hitman who needs to testify in International Court of law because we’re sure you’ll have a blast.

#3 Dunkirk

Genre: historical

Release date: 7/21/2017

According to IMDb, this is the first film from Christopher Nolan that is actually based on historical facts. It takes place during the WWII, and it tells the story about allied soldiers from Belgium, the UK, and France being evacuated while they are completely surrounded by Germans. And we can all agree there’s no better way to wake up from that heat-caused, summer slumber than being shaken up by a strong story about sacrifice and survival.

#4 Spider-Man: Homecoming

Genre: sci-fi, adventure, action

Release date: 7/7/2017

We get to meet Peter Parker as a teenager while he tries to align his high school life with the one belonging to his alter-ego, Spider-man. On the other hand, the city of New York is threatened once again by new and stronger evildoers so the Spider-man must come to the rescue! It’s needless to say this is a great new achievement from Marvel Studio that is perfectly suitable both for younger and older audience.

#5 Tulip Fever

Genre: Romance

Release date: 9/1/2017

Now, this is something to look forward, especially if you’re an incurable romantic and crave the times when online dating services didn’t exist. The trailer promises everything: a gorgeous orphaned girl who is practically sold to a wealthy but old merchant who hires a young artist to paint his young but miserable wife in the 17th century when the entire city of Amsterdam got caught in the tulip obsession (hence the title). Keep in mind that Alicia Vikander is already an Academy award winner so we’re really expecting her to give us all she’s got in this one!

How Having A YouTube Channel Can Increase Confidence (Guest Post)

A lack of confidence is something we all struggle with, especially having confidence when public speaking. Somehow talking in front of fellow humans is terrifying for us. I struggled with this problem, I still do, but it has gotten better over the past year, mainly because I started my own YouTube Channel.

If you start a YouTube channel it will help your confidence for sure. You’ll get nervous and awkward in front of the camera at first but it will begin to feel natural. You will get comfortable talking to an imaginary audience and the camera will stop intimidating you.

I think this is an awesome way of boosting confidence. You learn to public speak and there is something about standing in front of a camera and talking to it. It’s scary and makes you nervous but if you do it enough, it will stop freaking you out and so will talking to other humans.

Plus you will not be afraid of being filmed. A lot of my friends are terrified of cameras and they get stressed out when filmed but honestly, it barely bothers me anymore. I’ve made a fool of myself on YouTube, nothing fazes me anymore.

Another thing is; it helped me overcome my shyness. I am still a pretty reserved person with strangers but I used to be a literal clamshell, an awkward turtle. I’m still an awkward turtle but a friendlier one.

If it stresses you out that other people are watching your videos, you can start by making them Private and as you improve be brave and click that button to make them Public!

Don’t even think about telling me that you don’t have a good camera. I use my mother’s and it isn’t the best either and I still make videos. You can even film yourself with your phone. As long as you have some editing software (you can find tons of cheap editing software, like Wondershare Filmora) you can make a decent video.

Now I know a YouTube channel is not for everyone, and I know that not everybody has time but if you struggle with confidence and have some free time I encourage you try this method out. It may take a couple months but having a YouTube Channel really helped me increase my confidence.

Leona Petrovic (aka ingirlwords) is a blogger (https://inkgirlandwords.wordpress.com/) she writes poetry and other inspirational posts.  She also loves reading and writing and created a YouTube channel based on these two things (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhHM277Sv3R4n7i-NVH6Yw). She aspires to be an author and, maybe someday, an actor. She has written several articles for a local magazine and is currently obsessing over Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, the Infernal Devices, Falling Kingdoms, the Lunar Chronicles and the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, to name a few.

Woody Guthrie Quotes – A man who was a unique individual.

Opher's World

Woody is one of my heroes. He stood for fairness and justice. He stood against racism and supported the poor and exploited. Woody exemplified the Protest song that gave rise to Bob Dylan and the sixties rebellion against the establishment.

Some men rob you with a six-gun — others rob you with a fountain pen.

The bankers and the politicians who support them have robbed the whole world. The people who hold power and pull the strings, who control the inequality and war in order to create profit, rob everyone. The system is corrupt. For someone to earn in 45 minutes more than an average man can earn from all the hard work of a full year is simply wrong.

The world is filled with people who are no longer needed — and who try to make slaves of all of us — and they have their music and we…

Pen Over People (Guest Post)

She prefers the pen in her hand,

over the company of the people.

The pen never yells or screams,

Instead it leads to wonderful worlds.

It unleashes her creativity.

It is her weapon and they better beware.

Leona Petrovic (aka inkgirlwords) really does prefer the company of a pen over people. Her blog (https://inkgirlandwords.wordpress.com/) is the child of her creativity and features a lot of poetry and stories, including other posts. She aspires to be an author and is working on a novel.
