I Am Torn

I am torn

Between the life I want

And the life I am accustomed to

I can’t seem to choose

Happiness or safety?

What I need

Or what I already know?

  1. Benjamin Franklin said: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” As is often true with Franklin, the quote makes several points. What’s relevant here is that safety is temporary.

A century later, Benjamin Disraeli said, “Change is inevitable. Change is constant.”

Franklin also famously said, “Nothing in life is certain except death and taxes.”

The tradeoff in the poem is between something uncertain and something that it is certain you cannot keep.

Does that make the decision easier?
