How To Deal With Disappointment

I have been getting a lot of great ideas from fellow blogger Souparni about post ideas and I thought I should do this one because everyone at some point in life has been disappointed whether it was something small or something life altering. I was going to do this post particularly for students who didn’t achieve the grades they hoped to but to be honest this advice works for other disappointments too so I just wrote about it in general. Disappointments are a part of life and no one can get everything they want all the time. These are a few things I personally find helpful in dealing with disappointment:

Grieve- It’s normal to feel sad or even depressed after something disappointing has happened in your life. You just have to let the sadness run its course instead of trying to repress it. And you also need to remember that this feeling won’t last forever.

Acceptance- An important part of the process is accepting that something that you didn’t expect has happened and that unfortunately it is something disappointing. You need to accept that not everything works out perfectly and this was one of those incidences. Accepting this will allow you to move on faster.

Know yourself- You need to always remember that making mistakes or not achieving something you hope to is part of being human. The beauty of being human is that you are not perfect and that humans are constantly making mistakes every single day. Know that you can achieve anything you set your mind to and just because it didn’t happen this time doesn’t mean you should give up. It just means you have to work even harder than you did the last time. Know that you are capable of more than this.

Positivity- Sometimes it’s very hard to be positive when something disappointing has occurred in your life but you need to remember that this isn’t the end of the world. Something better is still out there waiting for you. So instead of mopping around and whining about how unfair life is do something positive because no matter how down you are it will definitely help. Go out and help the poor and remind yourself how lucky you are to have so much. Adopt an animal from a shelter and give it a new home. Listen to some positive music instead of depressing music. Read some self help books. Just basically do something to keep yourself busy and positive even if you don’t feel like it (which to be honest you probably won’t)

Smile- There is scientific evidence suggesting that the mere act of smiling can actually help a lot in changing your mood. Smiling causes an increase of the release of dopamine (the neurotransmitter in your brain that makes you happy) which makes you feel happier. So try doing something that will make you smile or better yet laugh like watching a funny movie or hanging out with friends.

Explore Your Choices- If the disappointing event has left you in a situation where you now have to rethink your future remember that even though you were looking forward to a certain future things do change. Look at this as a way of being able to readjust your plans. Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. So instead of giving up look for new methods of achieving what you want or make new goals that you can achieve. Just remember not to give up.

Do Better- If you get a chance to redo something you should take it. For example, for people who didn’t do so well in their exams you can resit some of your papers and work harder and do better. And for other things too, if you’re able to get a second chance to do better than before, go for it.

Reassess Your Life/Goals- If there is absolutely nothing you can do than reassess your goals and try out something different. Maybe this just wasn’t meant to be for you and maybe change is a good thing. Try out new things and make some new goals.

Sometimes disappointment can get overwhelming and therapy can help get your life back on track or at least teach you how to deal properly in a healthy was with the disappointment. You feeling disappointed or down can also effect the people around you and sometimes couples therapy can help you deal with it together as a couple.

Picking The Right Course

I given the awesome idea to do this post by another fellow blogger Souparni who has an amazing blog that I have recently been following. She has only recently started out and it would be awesome if everyone would support her blog by reading and following it!

The first part of this post was about picking the right university and todays is going to be about picking the right courses.

Picking The Right Course/s

First of all you have to make sure you choose the career you want, not one that someone else wants you to have. Many universities offer the choice of taking a few classes before choosing a major and if the university you’ve chosen offers this make sure you take a mix of classes that you enjoy and some that are more serious. Also if you’re interested in doing a double degree or majoring in something and minoring in another thing make sure the university you pick offers these options and talk to them about it in advance.

What Do You Enjoy Most?

When it comes to picking a major make sure you pick something you enjoy doing. Don’t just pick something you can make a lot of money in or something your parents want you to choose. Make sure the decision is yours and it’s something you won’t regret in a few years.

Future Income

Even though it’s important to pick something you enjoy doing you also have to make a living from this point on (unfortunately). So you can still pick something you’re passionate about but make sure to research where you are most likely to get a job doing it. Look at countries where that particular degree will get you a good job in and then pick a university to go to that country so it’s easier for you in the future.

What Country Are You Going To Reside in?

Think long and hard about what country you want to end up in because unfortunately it will be really hard for you to find a job in some countries so make sure you research all this before picking a university or picking a major. If you’re sure you want to live in that country make sure you pick a major that will allow you to get a job in that country.

What are your strengths?

What subjects are you freakishly good at? We all have at least one thing we are surprisingly good at and that should be your biggest clue as to what you should do in university because honestly university is incredibly tough and already being good at whatever degree course you’re taking will go a long way in helping to make your life in university easier.

Have a plan B

Even though it’s always a good idea to get a degree in something you’re passionate about, if you think you can’t make a living off it or if you think it’ll take you a while to get a job in that particular field you may want to think about doing something else alongside that you can do for a while until you can get the perfect job for yourself in the field you want to work in.

Ode To Anxiety

It was a struggle at first

But now my old friend visits

Again and again

Leaving me helpless in pain

Food becomes foe

And nights a sweaty drench

Laughter leaves the soul

Eyes are fogged and blank

I learn to laugh again

Feels good

Like emerging from a black hole

Learning to see again

Stronger I am and more confident

It will come again I know

But it’ll never take me back

I know

This is another awesome poem by MistryLand who hadn’t written for a while but I’m so glad she’s writing again! It’s so relatable and descriptive and really captures what having anxiety feels like.

Picking The Right University

I given the awesome idea to do this post by another fellow blogger Souparni who has an amazing blog that I have recently been following. She has only recently started out and it would be awesome if everyone would support her blog by reading and following it!

So this post is mainly going to be about picking the perfect university for you. As a lot of you know I am taking a gap year before going to university but I still need to find out a lot about universities and courses before the end of the year. So I’ve been doing a lot of research and thought I should share it because I know the struggle and if this can help someone else going through something similar that’s awesome. So Souparni actually asked me to do a post on both picking a university and picking university courses but I’ll do the latter next week and focus on picking the right university for todays post.

Picking The Right University

Price– so one very important thing about picking a university is the tuition and accommodation fees. Of course if you can afford any university it’s all well and good but if not you really have to look hard to find countries that offer more affordable prices. From what I’ve found so far Germany is incredibly affordable and so are most European countries except England which is quite expensive. So instead of going to the usual places most people go to (aka England, Australia and the US) try to look at other countries too which are extremely affordable plus it would be like a long adventure to be in a random foreign country! I found this site very helpful in finding universities all around the world so go check it out for more information!

Courses– So as everyone knows university/college is difficult so don’t over do it with the classes you take. Keep it minimal but also make sure you’re taking classes that you enjoy not just boring ones that make you question your life.

Accommodation- A lot (almost all) universities offer both on-campus and off-campus accommodation but you really should make sure you’re getting a room/apartment you’re comfortable in. For someone like me who prefers to spend a lot of time alone a random roommate is probably not a great idea and so ideally I would go for a room for just me. However if you’re an extrovert you should totally go for getting a random roommate who you can hang out with. Just basically what I’m trying to say is get a room that you know you’ll be comfortable in for 3-4 months at least. Don’t try out a roommate if you’re easily irritated or something like that because even though it’s good to get out of your comfort zone university dorms may not be the perfect place to do this. Remember you’ll be under a crazy amount of stress and you may end up doing/saying something you’ll later regret. So go to the university site and check out all the different types of accommodation they offer and email them and bug them if you have to because I mean you’re paying them a lot of money and you deserve to be comfortable.

Food– Okay so if you eat everything and don’t really have a problem with food and aren’t too picky this probably won’t be such a problem. However, for vegetarians, vegans or just picky eaters in general you should really make sure you know what food you’ll be getting in the university and it probably wouldn’t hurt to learn some cooking before you get to university.

Information– Make sure you know everything about the universities you’re interested in and make sure you have a bunch of back up plans because trust me you will need them. Make sure you know everything about the place you’re going even if it means emailing them to find out things you want to know. It will really help you when you get there to know these things, even the little things you don’t think matter.

Weather– For someone from Kenya weather is a problem for me personally because I haven’t ever really lived in a cold place. If you’re like me and haven’t really experienced any harsh weather make sure you prepare for it if you’re going to a different country to study in.

Cost Of Living- Some places may offer cheaper education/accommodation but the cost of living may be really high there so just make sure you can afford it before getting there.

Grades Required– Make sure you apply to a bunch of universities, even some that have very low grade boundaries because unless you’re psychic and know exactly what you are going to get a lot of things may go wrong and you may end up getting grades you really didn’t expect. I mean it would be awesome if you do well but all I’m saying is have a lot of back ups just in case.

I hope this post helps you out and if anyone has any more questions please comment and I’ll try to help out the best I can!

Next week I’ll be talking about picking courses for university because this post got longer than I expected so be sure to read that one for more information.
