Good Bad Habits

There are habits we are all familiar with that are frowned upon however some of them may actually be more beneficial to us than we care to admit. Here are a few good bad habits:

Chewing gum– firstly chewing gum actually helps you reduce your calories (go wild ladies!). To be exact it burns 11 calories per hour. Furthermore, it helps you curb your craving for sweet and high calorie foods. Secondly, chewing gum gives your ability to concentrate a boost so maybe schools need to start allowing students to chew gum in class (just a suggestion).

Swearing– even though we are constantly being told off for cursing it turns out swearing is really psychologically good for you (take that every adult ever!). Psychological studies have shown that swearing not only helps relieve/decrease pain it also helps you feel stronger. It also just generally makes you feel a lot better about situations. Sometimes the best remedy may just be cursing to your heart’s content (as long as you don’t harm anyone in the process). Swearing is also a great way of expressing your emotions, especially for people who find it difficult to express themselves. It helps you show anger, joy, surprise and so much more. And lastly, sometimes you just want to emphasize a point you’re making and swearing is a great f*cking way to do that.

Daydreaming– it may sometimes be frowned upon but we spend almost half our waking time with our head in the clouds because let’s face it- that is way more fun than actually listening to people (especially teachers). Daydreaming may actually make you more intelligent because it expands your spontaneous cognitive skills like intuition and sudden insights. Daydreaming also opens up your creative gates so if you’re a chronic daydreamer like I am don’t worry because you have great company from people like Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters and many more! Furthermore, daydreaming helps your memory- studies show that daydreamers are more likely to remember things even when distracted compared to others. Finally, drifting off for a while may be a great way to relax and relieve your stress for a while. It’s also a great way to fall asleep for insomniacs because it really calms down your body which can help you sleep.

Being messy– all our lives we have been told to clean up and be organized by everyone around us. We are often even told that cleanliness leads to success and messiness to failure. However, for us disorganized people it is almost impossible to stay organized and by the time we’re adults we end up giving up. But the thing is we’re perfectly comfortable in our mess and we actually work best in our clutter because for us it’s our comfort zone. Some studies actually conclude that messy rooms actually provoke creative thinking and working in chaos has certain advantages. In fact, being messy has even been linked to signs of genius and higher than average IQ.

So as you can see some bad habits can sometimes actually be good for you and if something gives you comfort maybe you should stick to it even if it is frowned upon by others.
